School uniforms retain appeal
A recent poll conducted on the Catholic Education Office Parramatta website suggests that formal school uniforms still hold appeal in modern society. Over 70 per cent of the 295 website visitors surveyed expressed a preference for formal school uniforms in our schools.
Students at Patrician Brothers College, Blacktown wear a formal uniform and principal, Santo Passarello, is a firm believer in the benefits of school uniforms.
‘School uniforms are significant because they provide students with a corporate, community identity. Parents like them, students like them and staff like them. It eliminates the potential disparity of the cost of dressing casually where things like designer jeans can come into play,’ says Santo.
There is also much debate around whether uniform has an impact on student behaviour and academic performance. Whatever the reasons, it seems that formal school uniforms still have strong appeal, with only 16 per cent of respondents opting for more casual uniforms, and only 13 per cent opting for no uniforms.
